Isle of Man Aircraft Registry
Plans are well advanced for the Isle of Man to launch its own aircraft register in late spring or early summer 2007. The Manx Register will in fact be a sub-register of the U.K. aircraft register operated by the Civil Aviation Authority and the enabling legislation is currently being finalised. Aircraft registered in the Isle of Man will bear the prefix 'M' in their aircraft registration letters.
The launch of the new register coincides with the bringing into production of a new wave of very light jet aircraft. Business aircraft manufacture is booming and some estimates predict that over 9,000 new aircraft will be required over the next ten years.
The Isle of Man aircraft register will accept planes of up to eight tonnes maximum take-off weight and this will enable it to accept a range of more conventional business jet, turbo prop and piston engine aircraft in addition to those mentioned above. It will however only accept aircraft operated in the private category.
This will preclude those used for continued hire or reward but will still allow businesses to operate aircraft for their own benefit and the benefit of their staff and for other companies in the group. Certain group schemes will also be permitted.
It is planned to charge fees lower than those of the U.K. C.A.A. and to make the whole process more user friendly than many aircraft registries.
