Offshore Company Formation VanuatuGereral Information about Vanuatu Vanuatu is a group of 83 islands, 65 of which are inhabited, in the southwest Pacific, north east of New Caledonia and north west of Fiji at latitude 16 deg. South and longitude 167 deg. East. It is about 2,250 km. from Sydney, Australia. The population is about 208,000. The capital and financial centre is Port Vila. The economy is supported by agriculture and financial services.
Vanuatu was ruled by Britain and France as a condominium until independence in 1980. It is now a republic. The President is Head of State and a Prime Minister and Cabinet exercise executive power. Elections are held every five years and the head of the majority party becomes Prime Minister.
Vanuatu Financial Services The financial services industry in Vanuatu dates from 1971. Activities other than banking are regulated by the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission, which was established in 1983. This led to a modernisation of the law and the introduction of anti-money laundering legislation.
The form of company normally used for international trading or investment activities is the Vanuatu International Company, incorporated under the International Companies Act No. 32 of 1992. Exempt companies, formed under the Companies Act (Cap 191) are also available. An international or exempt company has all the powers of a natural person except that it is not permitted to trade within or own real estate in Vanuatu.
