Offshore Company Formation Cook IslandsThe Cook Islands are scattered over 15 million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean, between French Polynesia and Fiji. The total land area is 240sq. km. The capital and financial centre is Raratonga, which is some 3,000 km. east of Auckland, New Zealand. The languages are English and Cook Islands Maori and the islands currency is the New Zealand dollar. The Cook Islands are self-governing parliamentary democracy in free association with New Zealand which is responsible for external affairs and defence. The main industries are financial services and tourism. Financial Services – the Cook Islands The financial services industry in the Cook Islands dates from 1981 when the government enacted legislation providing for the incorporation of Cook Island international companies and trusts, including banking, insurance and fund management. The industry received a major overhaul in 2003 in response to external developments and with the passing of the Cook Islands Financial Services Act 2003 regulation was brought up to international standards.
